Mt Buller & Mt Stirling draft Strategic Management Plans 2021/26 - have your say

In June 2021, the Resort Management Board invited stakeholders to participate in the development of Strategic Management Plans for Mt Buller and Mt Stirling.

The RMB is legislatively required to have 5-year plans for each resort which are in accordance with the 5-year Alpine Resorts Strategic Plan. They will also be useful in smoothing the transition to Alpine Resorts Victoria in 2022.

During these virtual consultations, participants worked through a facilitated process of identifying strategies and actions to enable investment and drive sustainable business, enhance visitor experiences, protect and enhance the mountain environment, deliver effective and efficient services and improve RMB capability.

The outcomes from these virtual sessions helped generate ideas and identify priorities for both mountains and have been incorporated into the draft Strategic Management Plans for Mt Buller available here and Mt Stirling available here.

Interested stakeholders are encouraged to review and comment on the Mt Buller 2021-2026 Strategic Management draft plan here and/or the Mt Stirling Strategic Management draft plan here by 15 December 2021.
This is your opportunity to influence the resorts’ priorities before, during and after the transition to Alpine Resorts Victoria.

Master Plan Village Concepts and Consultation

In December 2020 stakeholders were invited to participate in an online consultation and survey about future development opportunities for Mt Buller’s central village precinct.

Concepts within and around the village square were developed with input from representatives from Buller Ski Lifts, Mt Buller Chamber of Commerce, Mt Buller Rate Payers Association and Regional Development Victoria and based on the 2011 Master Plan principles of strengthening the village “heart” and increasing year-round visitation. You can access the Resort Master Plan 2011 here.

The consultation process provided stakeholders the opportunity to share their opinions, comments and feedback, with the findings to be used as the basis for progressing masterplan projects.

Feedback during the sessions and survey responses confirmed very strong support for redeveloping the Mt Buller Village Square to strengthen the “heart” and provide more options to increase visitation. The proposal to relocate the transport hub and reclaim the associated space is broadly popular with stakeholders, although pedestrian safety is a high priority. There was strong support for more indoor public space and facilities, an alpine coaster, zip lines, an adventure playground, ice skating, light & sound show, more F&B, and safe pedestrian areas.

Concerns are evident regarding potential overcrowding in the snow season and limited green season activity. Water based activities appear to be a conundrum, with strong levels of agreement and disagreement. While popular with many, ice skating is also a concern to others who question the required space and whether it can be commercially viable.

While not part of the consultation process related to the Village Square precinct, there was also strong, unprompted support for improvements to walking trails, mountain bike trails, horse riding trails, nature-based tourism and leveraging both the views and Mt Buller’s unique environment as ways to help make summer viable.
